Some free camping antics at Contis Plage
France is just the most wonderful place for camping. Huge dunes dominate hundreds of miles of unspoit coastline, backed by the largest pine forest in Europe. Camping under the trees at night is beautiful!! We decided on doing our fair share of free camping. There are many designated area in the forest, and some places that you just stumble upon to stay for the night. They lack the facilities of modern day life, but who needs a shower anyway when you’re going in the sea all day!
Each night we’d set up our little campsite, cook our dinner on the gas fire under the stars. Most night’s we were so tired that we got to bed pretty early. Its an early start when you’re free camping…..up early, tents packed away and at the beach by 7.30am to hit the waves before the frenchies had even considered waking up!!!
We started our camping in the north of the Les Landes area near the Arcachon basin at a beach called Contis Plage. It was really quiet as the tourist season had all but finished and we barely saw a sole the whole time we were there.
